Scott reaches the South Pole and finds he is second

Robert Falcon Scott's party arrives at the Pole about a month after Amundsen and dies on the return march. The expedition is included here for what it carried rather than for the race: its scientific programme, including the winter journey to collect emperor penguin eggs at Cape Crozier, is among the earliest deliberate biological work on the species this Journey treats as core.
