The Antarctic Treaty is signed at Washington

The twelve IGY nations sign a treaty reserving the continent for peaceful purposes, guaranteeing freedom of scientific investigation, and freezing the territorial question so that no activity under the treaty counts for or against any claim. Seven of the twelve had claims and three of those overlapped; none was abandoned and none was recognised. The instrument works by declining to answer its hardest question.
