CCAMLR adopts the Ross Sea marine protected area

After years of blocked proposals, the Commission agrees by consensus to a marine protected area in the Ross Sea region, entering into force at the end of 2017 and covering something over one and a half million square kilometres. It is the largest such designation agreed anywhere, and it was reached under the same consensus rule that had prevented it for years - which is the honest account of what a consensus body can and cannot do.
