The Arctic summer minimum drops far below anything previously observed

September sea-ice extent falls to roughly 4.2 million square kilometres, far below the previous record and far below what the models of the day projected for that decade. The 2007 minimum is the point at which Arctic sea-ice decline stopped being a trend line and became an event, and it prompted a substantial re-examination of how the models handled ice.
