Cook crosses the Antarctic Circle

HMS Resolution, under James Cook, crosses the Antarctic Circle - the first crossing on record. Cook circumnavigated the southern ice over three seasons without ever sighting the continent, and concluded that if land existed further south it would be locked in ice and of no use to anyone. That conclusion, wrong about the geography and right about the accessibility, kept the continent unvisited for another two generations and is the reason Antarctica has no deep human history to compare with the Arctic's.
