The cetacean biologist who led the satellite tagging programme at the Marine Mammal Institute, Oregon State University, that produced the first sustained record of where eastern North Pacific blue whales actually go. Tags attached under that programme to 171 blue whales off California and in the Gulf of California between 1993 and 2008 established the southward winter movement to Baja California, the Gulf of California and the eastern tropical Pacific, and the 1999 deployments confirmed the Gulf of California as a wintering ground.
