Maasai Mara National Reserve
node · earth
A Kenyan national reserve of about 1,510 km² in Narok County, contiguous with Serengeti National Park across the international border and managed by county authorities rather than by Kenya Wildlife Service. It began in 1961 as a 520 km² sanctuary in the Mara Triangle, was expanded, then reduced by stages to its present area by 1984. It is the northern, wetter end of the migratory circuit and holds the herds through roughly July to October; it is also Kenya's most visited wildlife destination, with year-round resident big-cat populations that are the basis of its safari reputation.
