Herds reach the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara and cross the Mara River repeatedly in both directions rather than once. Mass drownings occurred in at least 13 of 15 monitored years, delivering an average of about 6,250 carcasses and 1,100 tonnes of biomass to the river annually — a nutrient subsidy comparable to adding ten blue whales to a mid-sized river each year.
