Freed of rinderpest, wildebeest numbers rose from an estimated 250,000 in 1963 to over a million by the late 1970s, then stabilised. Sinclair's work showed the ceiling was set by dry-season food supply rather than by predation, which is the finding that reframed the whole system as food-limited.
