The Flavian Amphitheatre is inaugurated in Rome. It is the arch and Roman concrete working together on a building rather than a bridge: an outer skin of arcaded travertine, radial and annular concrete vaults carrying the seating and the circulation, and a plan that can empty tens of thousands of people through arched exits. What it demonstrates is not span but organisation - the same structural unit repeated until it becomes a building type.
