The Boğazköy tablet archives are excavated

Excavations at Boğazköy in central Anatolia, directed by Hugo Winckler, recovered thousands of cuneiform tablets from the archives of what proved to be Hattusa, capital of the Hittite state. The script was readable and the principal language was not. The find created the corpus from which Hittite would be identified nine years later, and it is the reason an entire Indo-European branch, extinct for three thousand years, entered the comparative record at all.
