The Pont du Gard carries an aqueduct on three tiers of arches

The bridge over the Gardon is built in three superimposed arcades to carry the Nimes aqueduct across the valley. It demonstrates the arch used as infrastructure rather than ornament: each arch in an arcade pushes against its neighbour, so only the end piers need heavy abutment, and the whole tiered structure is dry-laid cut stone with the channel on top falling at a very shallow gradient.
