The three-tiered aqueduct bridge carrying the Nemausus (Nîmes) aqueduct across the Gardon. It is the most legible surviving demonstration of the surveying achievement behind Roman water supply: the full channel runs about 50 km with an average gradient measured in centimetres per kilometre. It matters to this journey as evidence that the civic package - water, baths, monumental building - was delivered to provincial cities, not only to Rome. UNESCO World Heritage ref. 344.
