Work begun in 1929 finishes in 2002, seventy-three years later. The line the wires now follow is the line surveyed for steam locomotives in the 1890s: the traction changed twice, the alignment did not. It is the cleanest illustration available of which parts of a railway are replaceable and which are effectively permanent.
