A collaborative research programme formed within the IWC to continue work on Antarctic whale populations after the end of the SOWER survey series, with the Antarctic Blue Whale Project as a flagship. It is the reason the Antarctic subspecies has any modern time series at all: its dedicated voyages in 2013, 2015 and 2019 added 119 photo-identified whales to the Antarctic Blue Whale Catalogue, and its acoustic trends working group holds more than 300,000 hours of Southern Ocean passive acoustic data. Its existence is itself an argument - that after whaling ended, the only way to know what remained was to go and look on purpose.

- Antarctic blue whales produce a characteristic three-part Z-call: a first unit of 8-12 s at about 28 Hz, a short downsweep from 28 to 19 Hz, and a third unit of 8-12 s between 19 and 17 Hz, lasting up to about 18 s in total. The SORP Acoustic Trends working group had access to more than 300,000 hours of Southern Ocean passive acoustic data as of March 2020, collected over roughly twenty years from ships and moored recorders. - A POPAN superpopulation estimate from Antarctic blue whale photo-identification collected between 2003/04 and 2018/19 gives 3,506 whales (95% CI 2,107-5,832), with abundance in the final study year, 2018/19, estimated at 1,817 (95% CI lower bound 714); SORP voyages in 2013, 2015 and 2019 added 119 individuals to an Antarctic Blue Whale Catalogue totalling 552.
