Cherbourg — transatlantic roadstead

node · earth

First call of the maiden voyage, reached on the evening of 10 April 1912. Titanic was too large for the quays and anchored in the outer roadstead, so passengers and mail were carried out by the White Star tenders Nomadic and Traffic. About 274 passengers embarked here — a mix of wealthy Americans returning home and Levantine and Eastern European emigrants in third class — and 24 cross-Channel passengers landed.

Found the loss due to collision with an iceberg brought about by the excessive speed at which the ship was navigated; recorded the ship's particulars, the voyage timings, the ice messages received and the lifeboat complement; held that Titanic exceeded the Board of Trade requirement; found the Californian could have reached her; concluded (incorrectly) that the hull sank intact.
