A small specialty market — annual global premium historically in the hundreds of millions of dollars — that prices launch and in-orbit risk for satellite operators and their financiers. Its structural difficulty is that the exposure per event is enormous relative to the premium pool: a single large geostationary satellite can be insured for several hundred million dollars, so one total loss can exceed a year of industry premium.
