Space insurance

A small specialty market — annual global premium historically in the hundreds of millions of dollars — that prices launch and in-orbit risk for satellite operators and their financiers. Its structural difficulty is that the exposure per event is enormous relative to the premium pool: a single large geostationary satellite can be insured for several hundred million dollars, so one total loss can exceed a year of industry premium. The market suffered exceptional losses in 2023, including a major in-orbit antenna deployment failure, and several underwriters subsequently reduced or withdrew capacity, driving rates sharply upward for the operators who remained. Low-Earth-orbit constellations largely do not insure individual satellites at all: with thousands of cheap, replaceable spacecraft the operator self-insures by design, which removes the largest growth segment in space from the insurable market entirely. The sector is worth attention out of proportion to its size because insurers are the only actors in the space economy whose business is to price risk honestly, and their withdrawal is a signal about the underlying activity. Not a place.
