An iron, rare-earth and niobium deposit in Inner Mongolia, north of Baotou, worked since the 1950s and by a wide margin the largest single source of rare-earth elements in the world. Rare earths are not geologically rare — cerium is about as abundant in the crust as copper — but they occur diffusely, they occur together, and separating one lanthanide from its neighbours requires hundreds of stages of solvent extraction, an operation that is chemically demanding, capital-intensive and dirty. Bayan Obo's importance is therefore only half geological: the deposit is exceptional, and the co-located Baotou separation and magnet-making complex is what turns ore into neodymium-iron-boron magnets. Those magnets are what makes a direct-drive wind turbine generator and a permanent-magnet traction motor compact enough to be practical, which places a single Chinese district upstream of two of the transition's signature technologies. The concentration is a processing fact more than a mining one, and it is the reason rare-earth export controls became an instrument of trade policy rather than a mining question.
