Energy Transition

European heat pump sales fell in 2023, and fell harder in 2024 — in the one corner of this subject where nothing is unproven.

The cost curve is what a reader who already knows this subject would expect to meet first, and it is not here; in its place stand a domestic appliance and a sales figure that went down two years running. Domestic, unglamorous, slightly deflating. Accelerating and stalling are the two words this subject usually arrives with, and neither of them attaches to anything visible.

What is called the energy transition is one process that found a mechanism and several that never had access to it — and the obstacles in the second group are chemistry, mass and permitting queues, none of which a falling price touches.

Why Richseen chose this

Cost fell with cumulative output for photovoltaic modules and rose with cumulative output for reactors. The difference is not ideology; it is whether a thing comes off a production line or is assembled on a site by a coalition that will never assemble again. That one distinction does more work than any forecast, because it converts most public argument about energy from a dispute about optimism, which nothing settles, into a question about which sector is being discussed, which is checkable. Both halves of the demonstration sit in the same corpus: a forecasting method that failed in a documented direction, and the counter-example that shows why it did.

The mechanism that made solar cheap is real, repeatable and better evidenced than most things said about energy — and it reaches exactly one of the four obstacles in this subject, leaving chemistry, mass and the permitting queue standing where they were, only two of which are hard rather than merely difficult.

A clean grid stops being the general answer. The reader meets a class of emissions that is a product of the reaction rather than of the fuel, and for which "electrify it" is not a sentence that parses.

The instrument, and the number it named

The reader sees the political container the whole argument sits in — universal because its obligations are nationally determined, and therefore leavable without penalty.

Hard is not the same word as slow

The appliance from the first viewport comes back, and with it the sorting question — chemistry, physics, institutions or price — that the reader can now apply to a claim they have not read yet.

  • The cost relationship that explains cheap solar was written in 1936 about the manufacture of airframes. Aviation is also the sector that relationship helps least, because its binding constraint is energy per kilogram rather than the unit cost of anything. The industry that produced the mechanism is outside its reach.

  • These two are almost always named in the same breath and they did not behave the same way. A module is entirely a factory product; a wind project is a factory product bolted to marine construction, and the canonical relations say so separately. When steel, vessels and interest rates moved, one of them followed and the other did not.

  • Two deserts doing two different jobs with the same input. At one, sunlight is converted into electricity; at the other, sunlight is used to evaporate brine down to the metal that stores it. The transition depends on high-irradiance arid land twice over, for reasons that have nothing to do with each other.

  • A direct-drive turbine needs permanent magnets, and the magnet-grade material comes overwhelmingly from one district and the separation complex beside it. That is an ordinary supply-chain fact until export licensing turns it into a schedule constraint, which the corpus records happening within weeks in 2025.

  • The Journey's two awkward records answer each other. Fission is the technology that contradicts the learning curve, and it is also the weather-independent output that addresses exactly the multi-day problem a four-hour fleet cannot. Reading them together is the only way this corpus lets the endgame question be asked without being answered.

What is not settled

  • Which accounting boundary should the electrified share be measured on?

    Counted as final energy, electricity is about a fifth; counted as useful energy delivered, electric equipment is more efficient and the share looks larger; counted as primary energy, thermal generation losses make it different again. All three circulate in public argument, often without saying which. The Journey builds its frame on the first and says so.

  • Is the learning curve a mechanism, or a description of several mechanisms that happen to move together?

    Cumulative production correlates with research effort, factory scale, input prices and competitive pressure, and the fitted rate is not stable enough across technologies to be treated as a law. It has predicted well. That is a different claim from explaining well, and the corpus keeps the two apart.

  • Did reactor construction costs rise because of the technology or because of the institutions building it?

    The assembled cost series has been contested since publication on which reactors were included and on the treatment of currency and scope, and South Korean and some Chinese programmes show flatter or falling costs. The Journey uses fission as its counter-example while recording that the effect may be national rather than intrinsic.

  • What covers the days that storage duration cannot?

    How much of the residual can be met by demand flexibility rather than firm capacity has never been tested at high penetration. Estimates of the cost of the last few per cent of a decarbonised grid vary by an order of magnitude between studies, and the variation comes from assumptions about long-duration storage and demand response rather than from generation cost.

  • Can primary steel and cement reach deep abatement at commercial cost?

    Hydrogen reduction is demonstrated at pilot quantity and its commercial cost is unresolved; the corpus additionally records that it does not know the current status of the plant that would demonstrate it. For cement, no route to deep abatement without carbon capture has been demonstrated at scale, and capture at a kiln has been piloted rather than operated commercially.

  • How large is aviation's effect beyond its carbon dioxide?

    The largest genuinely uncertain quantity in the Journey. Contrail cirrus forcing has a wide confidence interval, is short-lived rather than cumulative, and depends on where and when a flight happens — which makes it simultaneously the sector's worst problem and its only fast-acting lever.

  • Was the shipping pricing mechanism adopted?

    The 2023 strategy mandated development of a fuel standard and a pricing mechanism as mid-term measures. The corpus records the framework negotiation with uncertain status and declines to assert an outcome. This is the one open item the Journey presents as open rather than as settled either way.

  • Do the hard sectors follow the easy ones with a lag, or is there no analogue for them at all?

    Several modelled pathways assume the first. Nothing in the record so far settles it, and the two readings imply very different mid-century outcomes from identical present data. Atlas states the disagreement and does not choose.

What to carry out of this

The heat pump is the case that pays for the whole taxonomy. Its physics is settled, its economics were favourable, its supply chain is not exotic, and sales went down — for reasons that are price ratios, withdrawn subsidy, a shortage of installers and the ordinary reluctance to let someone into the house. None of that is hard in the sense that limestone is hard, or that a long-haul aircraft is hard. It is difficult, which is a more tractable condition and an entirely different argument. Most claims about the energy transition average the two together, and the average describes nobody — which is a question of who the average is standing on. One country paid a large premium and the cost curve that came down was everybody's; the corpus keeps that reading open, but the premium was paid by somebody in particular. The mineral dependency sits in a salt flat where the hydrological objection to it is recorded as unresolved, a charge incurred now and adjudicated later, in a place that is not where the modules go. And the last obstacle in the chain is a householder with a quote in hand, declining a machine that works.

This is unfinished in the world, not only in the telling.
