Bell Telephone Laboratories announce the practical silicon solar cell

Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller and Gerald Pearson demonstrate a silicon photovoltaic cell of roughly six per cent efficiency at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey — the first photovoltaic device efficient enough to be a plausible power source rather than a laboratory curiosity. Cost confined it to satellites and remote telemetry for the next two decades. The date is given as the public announcement rather than as the date of the underlying work, which ran through 1953 and early 1954.
