The metal every electrified system is made of, and the one that appears least often on official critical-minerals lists. Copper carries current in motor windings, transformer coils, cabling, busbars and the distribution network, and the transition raises demand for it through three channels at once: electric vehicles use several times the copper of a comparable combustion car, wind and solar farms use more copper per unit of generating capacity than thermal plant, and expanded transmission and distribution networks are copper and aluminium by the megatonne. Its supply problem is unlike lithium's. There is no processing chokepoint of the rare-earth kind and no shortage of geological resource; the constraint is that ore grades in the major producing districts have declined over decades, so more rock must be moved, milled and leached for each tonne of metal, and that new mines routinely take fifteen to twenty years from discovery to production through permitting, financing and community consent. That timescale sits badly against a demand curve that policy is trying to steepen. Whether copper is "critical" is genuinely contested: several national lists exclude it precisely because supply is diversified, and several analysts argue the exclusion mistakes diversification for adequacy. Not a place.
