Theodore Paul Wright

American aeronautical engineer and administrator who, in a 1936 paper in the Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, published the observation that the labour cost of building an airframe fell by a predictable percentage each time the cumulative number built doubled. He was writing about aircraft production economics, not about energy; the relationship now called Wright's law was an operations finding intended to help manufacturers price a production run. Its later career is a good example of a narrow empirical result outliving its subject: the same functional form was applied to ships and semiconductors, then to photovoltaic modules and lithium-ion cells, and it is now the single most load-bearing empirical claim in energy-technology forecasting. Wright himself went on to senior wartime and civil aviation administrative roles in the United States. The attribution matters for a reason beyond credit — it locates the law in manufacturing, which is exactly the boundary condition this Journey turns on. Not a place.
