Mariana Trench

A crescent-shaped subduction trench in the western Pacific, east and south of the Mariana Islands, formed where the Pacific Plate is subducted beneath the smaller Mariana Plate. Commonly reported as roughly 2,550 km long and about 69 km wide. Because it is an arc thousands of kilometres long, no single coordinate represents it; the point given here is an indicative centroid near the southern end and must not be read as the trench's position.

- Post-2000 published maximum depths for the Challenger Deep, and the geodetic positions assigned to them, disagree by more than the accompanying stated uncertainties. A 2010 multibeam survey recorded a deepest sounding of 10,984 +/- 25 m, a value not confirmed by any direct pressure-gauge descent.
- GEBCO maintains the reference global bathymetric grid under joint IHO/IOC auspices; the Seabed 2030 project, launched in 2017, aims to map the entire ocean floor. Its own reporting for World Hydrography Day 2025 put 27.3 per cent of the ocean floor mapped to modern standards, up from 26.1 per cent a year earlier — so roughly three-quarters of the seafloor remains unsurveyed at modern resolution. V55 verification basis: the Seabed 2030 announcement was retrieved in summary; the GEBCO grid documentation itself was not opened, this session having no direct network access to gebco.net.
