Moss Landing battery storage complex
node · earth
A cluster of lithium-ion storage installations on Monterey Bay in Monterey County, California, built on and beside the site of an old gas-fired power station and among the largest concentrations of grid battery capacity in the world. It earns a place in this Journey twice over. It is the clearest physical embodiment of what four-hour storage is for — Californian batteries charge on midday solar and discharge into the evening ramp, and the CAISO net-load shape is the reason the fleet exists. And on 16 January 2025 a fire in the older Vistra-operated building at the site destroyed a large part of that phase, forced evacuations in the surrounding community and became the reference incident in every subsequent argument about battery siting, fire suppression and the difference between rack-in-building and containerised layouts. Both facts belong in the record. Storage is a real and working answer to the diurnal problem, and it is an industrial installation with industrial failure modes, and a Journey that reports only the first is not reporting the technology.

- Evidence
- Supports the description of the net-load shape, the deepening midday belly and steepening evening ramp, and the growth of solar and wind curtailment in California. V55 verification basis: not retrieved in this session; the original duck chart publication year is given as approximate, and no ramp magnitude or curtailment volume is quoted as a figure.
- The standard series for volume-weighted average lithium-ion pack and cell prices, supporting the roughly order-of-magnitude decline across the 2010s and the figure of about 115 United States dollars per kilowatt-hour reported in the 2024 edition. V55 verification basis: about.bnef.com was refused by the network egress proxy in this session; the 2024 figure is stated from author knowledge and the 2025 and 2026 editions were not seen at all, so the figure must not be presented as current. This is a commercial survey rather than a public statistical source, and its methodology is proprietary.
