A smaller subspecies of the Indian Ocean and southern Pacific whose migrations are the best documented of any blue whale, because it is the population that has been satellite-tagged most successfully. Eleven animals tagged off Western Australia were tracked for between 8 and 308 days, covering a mean of 3,009 km (SD 892) with individual tracks ranging from 832 km to 14,101 km, moving between Australian waters and Indonesian waters. The contrast with the Antarctic subspecies is the point: the two subspecies overlap in the southern Indian Ocean, but the pygmy blue whale does not go as far south, and its route is known in far more detail simply because tagging it has proved easier.
