A bathyscaphe designed by Auguste Piccard: a large float filled with gasoline for buoyancy, iron shot ballast for descent control, and a small thick-walled steel sphere for two crew. On 23 January 1960 Jacques Piccard and US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh took her to the bottom of the Challenger Deep. Her onboard instruments initially indicated about 11,521 m; the value was later recalculated to about 10,916 m, an early and instructive example of how method-dependent deep-ocean depth measurement is. Not a place.
