The first fibre-optic cable across an ocean, and the point at which the capacity of the seabed stopped being scarce. Built by a consortium led by AT&T, British Telecom and France Télécom at a reported cost of about $335 million, it entered service in December 1988 across roughly 6,000 km from Tuckerton, New Jersey, to a branching unit some way off Europe that split the system to Widemouth Bay in Cornwall and Penmarc'h in Brittany. It carried 280 Mbit/s on two working fibre pairs — about 40,000 simultaneous telephone circuits, against TAT-1's 36 thirty-two years earlier. Its repeaters were still electronic regenerators, because the erbium-doped optical amplifier was demonstrated only the year before it entered service; that timing is why TAT-8 marks the end of one era rather than the beginning of the next. It was retired in 2002 after a fault, and in 2025 the redundant cable began to be recovered from the seabed after some thirty-seven years on the bottom, which makes it one of the few systems whose entire life cycle — laid, worked, broken, abandoned, lifted — is a matter of record.
