Jerusalem (Old City)

city · earth

A city holy to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and one of the most contested places on earth in both religious and political terms. Among its monuments are the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque on the platform Jews call the Temple Mount and Muslims call al-Haram al-Sharif. Its political status is disputed: sovereignty over the Old City and East Jerusalem is not internationally settled, and the site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1981 at the request of Jordan and placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 1982, where it remains. This package describes the claims of each tradition as claims, adjudicates none of them, and takes no position on the political dispute.
