A Roman foundation of c. 47-50 CE at the lowest bridgeable point of the Thames, burned in the Boudican revolt of c. 60/61 CE and rebuilt as the provincial capital of Britannia. Included as the empire's far northwestern limit case: a city with a forum, basilica, baths and a Latin-writing population of merchants and officials, connected by road to a port and by sea to the rest of the Mediterranean system.
