Indonesia's new capital under construction in East Kalimantan, legislated in early 2022 after President Joko Widodo announced the relocation in August 2019, and the most instructive new-build city of the present decade because its trajectory is being reported in real time. The executive core — palace and ministry buildings — is reported by the project authority as substantially complete, and a symbolic Independence Day ceremony was held on site in August 2024. Beyond that core, the picture as of 2026 is of a project decelerating: retrieved reporting describes roughly 800 of a planned 6,600 hectares of the government area developed, a resident population in the low tens of thousands including about a thousand civil servants, state funding cut sharply for 2026, and the site's status downgraded in official language to a "political capital" with a presidential move now discussed for 2028. Nothing here is evidence that it cannot be built. It is evidence about what building a city actually costs in sustained annual appropriation, and how quickly that becomes contested when the government that promised it changes.
