Xi'an

city · earth

Modern capital of Shaanxi province and the successor city on the site of Chang'an. The Ming-era walls, the Bell Tower, the Muslim Quarter around the Great Mosque, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda built in 652 to house Xuanzang's returned scriptures all stand within it. The Beilin (Forest of Steles) Museum holds the Nestorian Stele of 781. Xi'an is the eastern terminus of the UNESCO Chang'an-Tianshan corridor inscribed in 2014 and the symbolic starting point used by modern Silk Road framing.
