Degeneracy pressure

The pressure exerted by a gas of fermions crowded into the smallest volume the Pauli exclusion principle allows. It does not depend on temperature, which is what makes it structurally different from the thermal pressure that holds a living star up: a degenerate object can cool without shrinking. Electron degeneracy supports a white dwarf; neutron degeneracy, together with the repulsive core of the strong nuclear interaction, supports a neutron star. Both supports have a ceiling, because as the object is compressed the electrons or neutrons become relativistic and the pressure stops rising fast enough to keep pace with gravity. That ceiling is the reason stellar endings come in exactly three kinds rather than a continuum. Not a place.
