ICC convicts Ahmad Al Faqi Al Mahdi for the destruction of Timbuktu's mausoleums

Having pleaded guilty on 22 August 2016, Al Mahdi was found guilty by Trial Chamber VIII on 27 September 2016 as a co-perpetrator of the war crime of intentionally directing attacks against historic monuments and buildings dedicated to religion — nine mausoleums and one mosque in Timbuktu — and sentenced to nine years' imprisonment. It was the first ICC prosecution centred on cultural destruction. The sentence was reduced by two years on 25 November 2021. The case converts 'heritage of humanity' from rhetoric into a chargeable offence with a named defendant.
