Armenia's traditional adoption of Christianity as state religion

Armenian tradition, following the hagiographic account of Agathangelos, holds that King Trdat III was baptised by Gregory the Illuminator in 301, making Armenia the first state to adopt Christianity. Scholars propose alternative dates ranging from 284 to no later than 325, and the primacy claim is contested — Aksum's fourth-century adoption is advanced by others.
