Council at Pataliputra and the despatch of Buddhist missions (traditional account)

Pali Buddhist chronicles record a council at Pataliputra under Moggaliputta Tissa around 250 BCE and the sending of missions to Sri Lanka, Kashmir, Gandhara and beyond, including Ashoka's son Mahinda to Sri Lanka. These claims come from later Buddhist textual tradition rather than from Ashoka's own inscriptions, and their historicity is debated; the event is recorded here as what the tradition holds, marked uncertain.
