Battle of Talas

Abbasid and Karluk forces defeat a Tang army near the Talas river, fixing the western limit of Tang influence. The battle is traditionally credited with transmitting papermaking westward through captured artisans, but that story appears only in much later sources and paper was already circulating in Central Asia; the battle is better read as a boundary marker than a cause.
