The bronze of the Colossus is sold for scrap

Arab forces took Rhodes in 653–654 CE and, by the surviving accounts, removed the fallen bronze of the Colossus and sold it. The statue had lain broken on the ground for roughly nine hundred years, far longer than it had stood upright.
