Anthropomorphic Buddha images appear in Gandhara and Mathura

Around the first century CE, sculptural workshops in Gandhara and at Mathura begin depicting the Buddha in human form, each with its own conventions — Gandhara drawing on Hellenistic and Roman drapery and facial modelling. Which school was first was long argued; the prevailing view is independent parallel development. The event marks the moment a travelling tradition acquired the visual language of the places it passed through.
