The Hijra — the Muslim community's migration from Mecca to Medina

Muslims hold that in 622 CE the Prophet Muhammad and the early community migrated from Mecca to Yathrib, subsequently Medina; the year became the epoch of the Islamic calendar. The event is recorded here as the tradition's own foundational chronology and as the point from which Islam is conventionally dated as a community with a political as well as a religious form — a combination that shaped how it later travelled with merchants and rulers.
