Lapita voyagers enter Remote Oceania

The Lapita cultural complex, marked by a distinctive dentate-stamped pottery, appears in the Bismarck Archipelago and then spreads rapidly eastward past the limit of intervisible islands into Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji and on to Tonga and Samoa. It represents the first human settlement of Remote Oceania and the entry of Austronesian languages into the open Pacific. The dates are conventional approximations from standing knowledge; no radiocarbon synthesis could be consulted in this session, and the chronology has been refined repeatedly.
