Austronesian speakers settle Madagascar

Speakers of an Austronesian language reached Madagascar from island Southeast Asia, crossing or skirting the Indian Ocean, and their language became Malagasy. The dating is contested and the route is not established: proposals range across direct open-ocean voyaging and passage along the Indian Ocean rim, and estimates of the settlement date differ by several centuries. What is not in dispute is the origin, which the language establishes independently of any archaeological evidence.
