Malacca's rulers adopted Islam in the fifteenth century, and the port then became a principal node for the religion's spread across the archipelago through its trading partners. The precise date and circumstances are given differently across chronicle and scholarly sources. It is the clearest Southeast Asian case of the top-down pattern — ruler, then court, then commercial network — though how far and how fast popular practice followed is debated.
