Traditional founding of the first cave at Mogao

Tradition assigns the cutting of the first cave at the Mogao site near Dunhuang to 366 CE, following a monk's vision. The date comes from later inscriptions and textual tradition rather than from independent dating of the earliest surviving cave, and is best treated as traditional. What is not in doubt is that carving and painting continued at the site from roughly the fourth to the fourteenth century.
