The collapse of Sasanian rule in the mid-seventh century removed state sponsorship from Zoroastrianism in its heartland. The subsequent decline of Zoroastrian population in Iran took centuries and its causes are debated in the literature: jizya taxation and legal disadvantage, social and economic incentive, episodes of coercion, and voluntary conversion are all argued, with the balance disputed. The event marks the reversal of the elite-adoption mechanism, not a single moment of change.
