Tea first shipped to Europe by sea

Dutch East India Company vessels carried the first commercial consignments of tea to the Netherlands in the early seventeenth century, from where it spread as an expensive novelty to other European markets. It was sold publicly in London coffee houses from the 1650s and remained a luxury for a century afterwards, kept costly by high duties and by the difficulty of the China trade. The route was now maritime, but the supply chain still terminated at Chinese ports controlled entirely by Chinese sellers.
