The Xi'an stele is erected

On 4 February 781 the Jingjiao stele was erected at or near Chang'an, composed by the monk Jingjing and inscribed in Chinese and Syriac, recording about 150 years of the Church of the East in China. It is the best-dated single object in this Journey, and its Chinese phrasing borrows Daoist and Buddhist vocabulary to state Christian doctrine — the mechanism of syncretism caught in the act of writing.
