Xuanzang travels to India and back

The monk leaves Chang'an in defiance of an imperial travel ban, crosses the Tarim oases and Central Asia to India, studies at Nalanda, and returns sixteen years later with 657 Sanskrit texts. His return route crosses the Pamir. The account he compiles in 646 remains a principal source for the geography and religious life of the corridor.
