Xuanzang's overland journey to India and return

The Chinese monk Xuanzang travelled overland to India and back between roughly 629 and 645, returning with manuscripts and producing the Da Tang Xiyu Ji, a record of the western regions. His account is one of the richest descriptions of the corridor's monasteries, kingdoms and road conditions, and is a reminder that scholarly and devotional travel used exactly the same infrastructure as commerce, and often the same caravans.
