Gibbon's narrative is the principal reason 'the fall of Rome' is a fixed idea in the anglophone imagination and the reason a single date is expected at all. His framing was shaped by 18th-century anxieties about the fragility of civilisation and has been under sustained scholarly revision since Momigliano in the 1930s.
